5:1NOW may I who am myself an elder say a word to you my fellowelders? I speak as one who actually saw Christ suffer, and as one who will share with you the glories that are to be unfolded.
5:2Shepherd your flock of God, looking after them not because you feel compelled to, but willingly, as God would wish. Never do this work thinking of your personal gain but with true compassion,
5:3You should aim not at being dictators but examples of Christian living in the eyes of the flock committed to your charge.
5:4And then, when the Chief Shepherd reveals himself, you will receive that crown of glory which cannot fade.
5:5You younger members must also accept the authority of the elders. Indeed all of you should defer to one another and wear the "overall" of humility in serving each other. God is always against the proud, but he is always ready to give grace to the humble.
5:6So, humble yourselves under God's strong hand, and in his own good time he will lift you up.
5:7You can throw the whole weight of your anxieties upon him, for you are his personal concern.
5:8Be selfcontrolled and vigilant always, for your enemy the devil is always about, prowling like a lion roaring for its prey.
5:9Resist him, standing firm in your faith, remembering that the strain is the same for all your fellowChristians in other parts of the world.
5:10And after you have borne these sufferings a very little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to share his eternal splendor through Christ, will himself make you whole and secure and strong.
5:11All power is his for ever and ever, amen!
5:12I am sending this short letter by Silvanus, whom I know to be a faithful brother, to stimulate your faith and assure you that the above words represent the true grace of God. See that you stand fast in that grace!
5:13Your sisterchurch here in "Babylon" sends you greetings, and so does my son Mark.
5:14Give each other a handshake all round as a sign of love. Peace be to all true Christians.
