24:124:1 Now on the first day3282 of the week, at early dawn, the women3283 went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices3284 they had prepared.
24:224:2 They3285 found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb,3286
24:324:3 but when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3287
24:424:4 While3288 they were perplexed3289 about this, suddenly3290 two men stood beside them in dazzling3291 attire.
24:524:5 The3292 women3293 were terribly frightened3294 and bowed3295 their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living3296 among the dead?
24:624:6 He is not here, but has been raised!3297 Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,3298
24:724:7 that3299 the Son of Man must be delivered3300 into the hands of sinful men,3301 and be crucified,3302 and on the third day rise again.”3303
24:824:8 Then3304 the women remembered his words,3305
24:924:9 and when they returned from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven3306 and to all the rest.
24:1024:10 Now it was Mary Magdalene,3307 Joanna,3308 Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles.
24:1124:11 But these words seemed like pure nonsense3309 to them, and they did not believe them.
24:1224:12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb.3310 He bent down3311 and saw only the strips of linen cloth;3312 then he went home,3313 wondering3314 what had happened.3315

Jesus Walks the Road to Emmaus

24:1324:13 Now3316 that very day two of them3317 were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles3318 from Jerusalem.3319
24:1424:14 They3320 were talking to each other about all the things that had happened.
24:1524:15 While3321 they were talking and debating3322 these things,3323 Jesus himself approached and began to accompany them
24:1624:16 (but their eyes were kept3324 from recognizing3325 him).3326
24:1724:17 Then3327 he said to them, “What are these matters3328 you are discussing so intently3329 as you walk along?” And they stood still, looking sad.
24:1824:18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him,3330 “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn’t know3331 the things that have happened there3332 in these days?”
24:1924:19 He3333 said to them, “What things?” “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene,” they replied, “a man3334 who, with his powerful deeds and words, proved to be a prophet3335 before God and all the people;
24:2024:20 and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over3336 to be condemned to death, and crucified3337 him.
24:2124:21 But we had hoped3338 that he was the one who was going to redeem3339 Israel. Not only this, but it is now the third day since these things happened.
24:2224:22 Furthermore, some women of our group amazed us.3340 They3341 were at the tomb early this morning,
24:2324:23 and when they did not find his body, they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels,3342 who said he was alive.
24:2424:24 Then3343 some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.”3344
24:2524:25 So3345 he said to them, “You3346 foolish people3347 – how slow of heart3348 to believe3349 all that the prophets have spoken!
24:2624:26 Wasn’t3350 it necessary3351 for the Christ3352 to suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
24:2724:27 Then3353 beginning with Moses and all the prophets,3354 he interpreted to them the things written about3355 himself in all the scriptures.

24:2824:28 So they approached the village where they were going. He acted as though he wanted to go farther,3356
24:2924:29 but they urged him,3357 “Stay with us, because it is getting toward evening and the day is almost done.” So3358 he went in to stay with them.

24:3024:30 When3359 he had taken his place at the table3360 with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it,3361 and gave it to them.
24:3124:31 At this point3362 their eyes were opened and they recognized3363 him.3364 Then3365 he vanished out of their sight.
24:3224:32 They3366 said to each other, “Didn’t3367 our hearts3368 burn within us3369 while he was speaking with us on the road, while he was explaining3370 the scriptures to us?”
24:3324:33 So3371 they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem.3372 They3373 found the eleven and those with them gathered together
24:3424:34 and3374 saying, “The Lord has really risen, and has appeared to Simon!”3375
24:3524:35 Then they told what had happened on the road,3376 and how they recognized him3377 when he broke the bread.

Jesus Makes a Final Appearance

24:3624:36 While they were saying these things, Jesus3378 himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”3379
24:3724:37 But they were startled and terrified, thinking3380 they saw a ghost.3381
24:3824:38 Then3382 he said to them, “Why are you frightened,3383 and why do doubts3384 arise in your hearts?
24:3924:39 Look at my hands and my feet; it’s me!3385 Touch me and see; a ghost3386 does not have flesh and bones like you see I have.”
24:4024:40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.3387
24:4124:41 And while they still could not believe it3388 (because of their joy) and were amazed,3389 he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”3390
24:4224:42 So3391 they gave him a piece of broiled fish,
24:4324:43 and he took it and ate it in front of them.

Jesus’ Final Commission

24:4424:44 Then3392 he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me3393 in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms3394 must be fulfilled.”
24:4524:45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures,3395
24:4624:46 and said to them, “Thus it stands written that the Christ3396 would suffer3397 and would rise from the dead on the third day,
24:4724:47 and repentance3398 for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed3399 in his name to all nations,3400 beginning from Jerusalem.3401
24:4824:48 You are witnesses3402 of these things.
24:4924:49 And look, I am sending you3403 what my Father promised.3404 But stay in the city3405 until you have been clothed with power3406 from on high.”

Jesus’ Departure

24:5024:50 Then3407 Jesus3408 led them out as far as Bethany,3409 and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
24:5124:51 Now3410 during the blessing3411 he departed3412 and was taken up into heaven.3413
24:5224:52 So3414 they worshiped3415 him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,3416
24:5324:53 and were continually in the temple courts3417 blessing3418 God.3419
