3:13:1 I am the man258 who has experienced259 affliction

from the rod260

of his wrath.

3:23:2 He drove me into captivity261 and made me walk262

in darkness and not light.

3:33:3 He repeatedly263 attacks me,

he turns his hand264

against me all day long.265

ב (Bet)

3:43:4 He has made my mortal skin266 waste away;

he has broken my bones.

3:53:5 He has besieged267 and surrounded268 me

with bitter hardship.269

3:63:6 He has made me reside in deepest darkness270

like those who died long ago.

ג (Gimel)

3:73:7 He has walled me in271 so that I cannot get out;

he has weighted me down with heavy prison chains.272

3:83:8 Also, when I cry out desperately273 for help,274

he has shut out my prayer.275

3:93:9 He has blocked276 every road I take277 with a wall of hewn stones;

he has made every path impassable.278

ד (Dalet)

3:103:10 To me he is like a bear lying in ambush,279

like a hidden lion280

stalking its prey.281

3:113:11 He has obstructed my paths282 and torn me to pieces;283

he has made me desolate.

3:123:12 He drew284 his bow and made me285

the target for his arrow.

ה (He)

3:133:13 He shot286 his arrows287

into my heart.288

3:143:14 I have become the laughingstock of all people,289

their mocking song290

all day long.291

3:153:15 He has given me my fill of bitter herbs

and made me drunk with bitterness.292

ו (Vav)

3:163:16 He ground293 my teeth in gravel;

he trampled294

me in the dust.

3:173:17 I295 am deprived296 of peace;297

I have forgotten what happiness298

is.

3:183:18 So I said, “My endurance has expired;

I have lost all hope of deliverance299

from the Lord.”

ז (Zayin)

3:193:19 Remember300 my impoverished and homeless condition,301

which is a bitter poison.302

3:203:20 I303 continually think about304 this,

and I305

am depressed.306

3:213:21 But this I call307 to mind;308

therefore I have hope:

ח (Khet)

3:223:22 The Lord’s loyal kindness309 never ceases;310

his compassions311

never end.

3:233:23 They are fresh312 every morning;

your faithfulness is abundant!313

3:243:24 “My portion is the Lord,” I have said to myself,314

so I will put my hope in him.

ט (Tet)

3:253:25 The Lord is good to those who trust315 in him,

to the one316

who seeks him.

3:263:26 It is good to wait patiently317

for deliverance from the Lord.318

3:273:27 It is good for a man319

to bear320

the yoke321 while he is young.322

י (Yod)

3:283:28 Let a person323 sit alone in silence,

when the Lord324

is disciplining him.325

3:293:29 Let him bury his face in the dust;326

perhaps there is hope.

3:303:30 Let him offer his cheek to the one who hits him;327

let him have his fill of insults.

כ (Kaf)

3:313:31 For the Lord328 will not

reject us forever.329

3:323:32 Though he causes us330 grief, he then has compassion on us331

according to the abundance of his loyal kindness.332

3:333:33 For he is not predisposed to afflict333

or to grieve people.334

ל (Lamed)

3:343:34 To crush underfoot

all the earth’s prisoners,335

3:353:35 to deprive a person336 of his rights337

in the presence of the Most High,

3:363:36 to defraud a person in a lawsuit –

the Lord338

does not approve339 of such things!

מ (Mem)

3:373:37 Whose command was ever fulfilled340

unless the Lord341

decreed it?

3:383:38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that everything comes –

both calamity and blessing?342

3:393:39 Why should any living person343 complain

when punished for his sins?344

נ (Nun)

3:403:40 Let us carefully examine our ways,345

and let us return to the Lord.

3:413:41 Let us lift up our hearts346 and our hands

to God in heaven:

3:423:42 “We347 have blatantly rebelled;348

you349

have not forgiven.”

ס (Samek)

3:433:43 You shrouded yourself350 with anger and then pursued us;

you killed without mercy.

3:443:44 You shrouded yourself with a cloud

so that no prayer can get through.

3:453:45 You make us like filthy scum351

in the estimation352

of the nations.

פ (Pe)

3:463:46 All our enemies have gloated over us;353

3:473:47 Panic and pitfall354 have come upon us,

devastation and destruction.355

3:483:48 Streams356 of tears flow from my eyes357

because my people358

are destroyed.359

ע (Ayin)

3:493:49 Tears flow from my eyes360 and will not stop;

there will be no break361

3:503:50 until the Lord looks down from heaven

and sees what has happened.362

3:513:51 What my eyes see363 grieves me364

all the suffering of the daughters in my city.365

צ (Tsade)

3:523:52 For no good reason366 my enemies

hunted me down367

like a bird.

3:533:53 They shut me368 up in a pit

and threw stones at me.

3:543:54 The waters closed over my head;

I thought369

I was about to die.370

ק (Qof)

3:553:55 I have called on your name, O Lord,

from the deepest pit.371

3:563:56 You heard372 my plea:373

“Do not close your ears to my cry for relief!”374

3:573:57 You came near375 on the day I called to you;

you said,376

“Do not fear!”

ר (Resh)

3:583:58 O Lord,377 you championed378 my cause,379

you redeemed my life.

3:593:59 You have seen the wrong done to me, O Lord;

pronounce judgment on my behalf!380

3:603:60 You have seen all their vengeance,

all their plots against me.381

ש (Sin/Shin)

3:613:61 You have heard382 their taunts, O Lord,

all their plots against me.

3:623:62 My assailants revile and conspire383

against me all day long.

3:633:63 Watch them from morning to evening;384

I am the object of their mocking songs.

ת (Tav)

3:643:64 Pay them back385 what they deserve,386 O Lord,

according to what they387

have done.388

3:653:65 Give them a distraught heart;389

may your curse be on them!

3:663:66 Pursue them390 in anger and eradicate them

from under the Lord’s heaven.
